For most of the year it seems as if the West Coast is unable to support any but the toughest and the most enduring forms of life. However, the seemingly lifeless soil sustains more than 4000 floral species. These plants lie dormant from the end of one rainy season to the beginning of the next, or even for a number of consecutive years of low rainfall.

Surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing
Elands Bay is an internationally recognized surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing destination with the summer winds of October to March combining with the perfect left point waves to consistently produce world class surf, sail and kite conditions.

Fishing
It is a crayfish and snoek mecca with galjoen and hotnotvis aplenty.

Birdwatching
Verlorenvlei is a birdwatchers paradise, home to 240 different species of bird. Notable species include Purple Gallinule, Eastern White Pelican, African Spoonbill, Cape Shoveller, African Fish Eagle, Goliath and Purple Herons as well as European Bee-eaters, which breed in this area.

Rock art
Rock art can be found in the spectacular formations of of Baboon Point, the most significant archaeological sites in Southern Africa, and recently proclaimed a Provincial Heritage Site.
Apart from the remains of a large painting of an eland and a fat-tailed sheep, the rock surface is covered with many red handprints, most of which are what are known as "decorated handprints".

Wild flowers
Spring delivers a magical carpet of flowers which is a must for any visitor. Namaqualand Daisies, perennial herbs, aloes, lilies and a host of other species create a tapestry of indigenous flowers which are unparalleled anywhere.

Interesting West Coast towns nearby
The nearby towns of Lamberts Bay, Clanwilliam and Veldrift are nearby and make for interesting daytrips.

Lamberts Bay is a traditional fishing village where you can still find unspoilt beaches and experience the lives of the friendly local people. Lamberts Bay provides some of the best bird watching in the Western Cape and you can also watch Southern Right whales from June to November.

Clanwilliam is situated at the foot of the mighty Cederberg mountain range . It has lots to offer, namely the beauty of the mountains, rock art, bird-watching, lots of historical buildings, the scenic beauty of the flowers (in season), as well as watersports.
